Former Rangers and Chelsea striker John Spencer is being linked with the top job at incoming MLS franchise Portland.
The 39-year old, who is the current assistant at the Houston Dynamo, confirmed that he turned down the offer to interview for the vacant position at DC United because he had accepted the offer to interview for another role, presumably with Portland.
"The reason I turned down an offer to go interview (with D.C.) was I already had an interview set up with another club," Spencer said. "And just out of professional courtesy to the team that had contacted me first, I felt it was professional not to accept another offer (to interview).
"If I go to do an interview, I'm telling this team that, 'You know what? I'd love to come and be your head coach. I will be totally committed to your program.' And then for me to leave there and hop on a plane and go somewhere else for another interview, I don't think that shows me in a good light. I think it kind of shows me as one who would throw myself out to every club in the country that needs a head coach."
Although it is Portland who has been touted as the club he is going for the job with, Spencer refused to name the team in question.
"This team, which I can't name for obvious reasons, contacted me and said they'd love for me to come in," said Spencer, who has spent the past four seasons as an assistant to Dominic Kinnear. "Everything went fantastically well."
