Ex-Rangers chairman Johnston lashes out at Whyte

Former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston has hit out at owner Craig Whyte for forcing the club towards administration.

The Glasgow giants lodged papers with the Court of Session in Edinburgh yesterday regarding their current financial position and the ex-chief has seen the club’s worst nightmares come true nine months after the new regime took control.

Johnston told Record Sport that he feared Rangers would go into administration and is alarmed by the fact that there is nobody left from when Sir David Murray, who sold to Whyte for £1 in May 2011, was in charge.

“This is our darkest day, without question. It’s the darkest day because the reality is now registering with people who had previously hoped everything was going to be alright. There were always people who believed,” Johnston said.

“But now? No, this is the darkest day. I knew it was coming but even I have been left in total shock. I still hoped I would never have to see this.

“I said a couple of weeks ago that administration was inevitable so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. But it’s still a shocking experience.

“The saddest thing about it all is that – because Craig Whyte has eviscerated the board – there is no one left to represent Rangers Football Club. Nobody. But there are plenty of people there to represent Craig Whyte.

“What the fans have to understand is that he is doing exactly what he wants to do in his own best interests.

“He is representing himself and has made sure there is no gathering point or nucleus of influence or power that can look out for what is best for Rangers Football Club.

“That was our biggest concern. He has successfully torched any opposition or anyone who is there to look after the best interests of the club.”
