Ex-PFA chief Carlisle backing England push for Man Utd's Januzaj

Former PFA chairman Clarke Carlisle has backed the FA's move for Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.

Carlisle, a third generation West Indian immigrant, told BT Sport's Life's a Pitch England should follow the example of fellow international sides in embracing non-native born players.

"The thing about this for me is that we as a nation are miles behind other nations [in terms of taking foreign talent in]," he said.

"And you have to separate the idealistic from the realistic - and if we are going to keep ourselves years behind other nations just to stay true to some kind of utopia of what football should be instead of actually keeping up with the joneses and being level with them.

"You know France won a world cup with Vieira and Desailly back in the day.

"Its hard to criticise Jack Wilshere."
