Ex-Palace, Energie Cottbus defender Berhalter honored by LA Galaxy

Gregg Berhalter was given the captain's armband and played a full 90 minutes in his final regular season home match for the LA Galaxy.

The 38-year old veteran will close the curtain on a fabulous career following the Galaxy's run in the upcoming MLS play-offs but was delighted to be honored by the club in the 1-0 victory over Chivas USA on the weekend.

"There definitely were some (emotions)," he said. "But I kind of wanted to get this game out of the way so I could focus on the rest of the season and the playoffs."

Berhalter said he was able to make such a good go of it in his career - which led him to Holland, England, Germany and two World Cups with the USA team - by always acting in a professional manner.

"You develop it over the years, but you realize if you want to succeed overseas, in any profession, you need to take your job as seriously and you need to be professional and work hard," he added.

"There's thousands of other guys fighting for my job.

"I'm not going to last if I'm messing around."
