Ex-NZ international Wilkinson to target Colombia in global search for Portland Timbers players

Portland Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson is set to undergo a global hunt for potential new signings for the MLS club.

The former New Zealand international will head to South America, Africa and Europe in a bid to unveil some hidden talent and will also try to add a third Colombian to the Timbers roster to link up with Jorge Perlaza and Diego Chara.

"(I'm) going to a few countries in November. (I'm) going to Colombia (and) watching a specific player and also a player of interest," Wilkinson said.

"After Colombia, I'm off to Ghana and Togo. Then I'm coming back and going to Europe. In between all that I'll be in Los Angeles and New York as well. It's going to be a busy month.

"When you've got two good Colombians, who are great people and great professionals, it's easier to maybe bring in a younger Colombian and they'll be great role models for that other person," Wilkinson added.

"If you look at (MLS) organizations in the past, they've generally taken foreigners in groups. It helps players as far as settling in the environment, especially when you have two and you're adding a third."

He added: "We've seen that the Colombians can be very successful in this league. Successful in a short period of time."
