Ex-Notts County striker Rodgers delighted with first NYRB goals

Luke Rodgers admitted it was a great feeling to open his account for new club New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

The former Notts County striker struck twice to help his side to a 3-0 victory over San Jose Earthquakes at Red Bull Arena and admitted it was nice to finally be playing after a long battle trying to get a visa to come to the USA.

"I'm so pleased to be back playing and over the moon with the goals," he said.

Rodgers said that head coach Hans Backe had likened him to Liverpool's Joe Cole, a comment which worried him as he thought he may not be able to live up to expectations, however, he did show what made a top scorer in England's lower leagues.

"Hans was telling people I was like Joe Cole, and I was thinking what are you doing to me? I'm no one special I just try to work hard for the team and score goals," he added.

Backe, who coached Rodgers at Notts County, said the 29-year old will certainly improve with the more game time he receives.

"It's phenomenal to score two goals and set up the third. But this is the way he plays; and he's not fit 100%," he said.

"He's been away almost three months. He's trained two or three weeks with us at maximum, so he will definitely improve."
