Ex-Newcastle, Tottenham ace Ginola set to sue Houllier

David Ginola is set to sue ex-boss Gerard Houllier for quotes he has made about the former France winger.

Back in 1993, France needed just a draw in their final USA 1994 qualifier against Bulgaria to make it through to the World Cup finals but failed to do so after what Houllier feels was a late Ginola error.

With the scores locked at 1-1, substitute Ginola needed to hang onto the ball but instead put in a long misplaced cross which Bulgaria pounced on and took it down the other end to score a winner, forcing Les Bleus to miss qualification.

At the time, Houllier spoke negatively about the incident, saying that Ginola 'stabbed France in the back' and has recently had quotes attributed to him released in a book called Coaches' Secrets which refer to the ex-Newcastle United and Tottenham ace in an offensive manner.

A spokesman for Ginola told BBC Sport that the Frenchman is riled by the former Liverpool manager's words.

"David is absolutely incensed," said the spokesman. "Houllier should stop talking like this. Stop singling David out.

"To use those words, and to have them in a book that is meant to sell and to sell heavily, this was a very heavy quote."

The first court date, which Ginola is not expected to attend, is scheduled for 12 December in Toulon.
