Ex-Newcastle, Inter striker Martins puts Nigeria frustration aside for Seattle Sounders

Obafemi Martins has not spent the last week sitting around thinking about the fact he was not selected by Nigeria for the 2014 World Cup.

The 29-year old striker missed out on Stephen Keshi's preliminary Super Eagles squad for Brazil but that did not stop him from firing home a brilliant goal in the Seattle Sounders' 1-0 triumph over San Jose Earthquakes on the weekend.

Martins netted the only goal of the contest in the eighth minute with a stunning chip over Quakes keeper Jon Busch from a tight angle following a lovely ball from Gonzalo Pineda.

And after missing out on the Nigeria squad for Brazil, Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid was delighted to see the former Newcastle United, Inter Milan and Levante forward put his personal disappointment to the side for the good of his club.

"That's an outstanding goal," Schmid said.

"It's just an athletic ability you can't teach, it's just something that someone has. It's definitely as good as a goal that's been scored here (at CenturyLink Field).

"He knows he's got to drop and find the ball a little more. I thought Oba was fantastic tonight. He was busy, he was active. He put in a tremendous effort in terms of covering ground tonight."

Of the man who has scored five goals and provided six assists, Schmid added: "I thought he was really motivated and played well.

"In his disappointment in not being selected, he's not walking around moping. He is going out there and showing, 'Hey, you made a mistake.' And that's good for us. What he did for Seattle tonight was fantastic."
