Former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd fears for Alan Pardew's future.

Shepherd is dead against the appointment of Joe Kinnear as director of football.

"If it is true there is only one man who can make this marriage work and that is Pardew," said Shepherd.

"I think he will be manager at start of the season but I am not sure he will be at the end. If it doesn't work, Pardew will be off."
