Former Newcastle Untied boss John Carver says Adam Armstrong boasts Premier League potential.
Armstrong is starring on-loan at Coventry City this season.
Speaking on Match of the Day 2 Extra, Carver said: “Last year I had to keep Adam Armstrong at St James' Park because I had nobody else. I had to hold up his development.
“The club held up his development because he should have been playing at Coventry last season, this season he should be somewhere like Rotherham in the Championship.
“We have slowed his development down.
“If a kid is good enough they will get an opportunity.
“There's nothing more that Newcastle fans want than a local lad.
“He's a west end lad and they would love it if he becomes the next Alan Shearer."
