Ex-Middlesbrough defender Whyte confident Strachan will enjoy the club

Former Middlesbrough defender Derek Whyte is confident that new Boro boss Gordon Strachan will enjoy the challenge of leading a new club.

Whyte, who also played with Celtic before moving to the Riverside, can see similarities in career paths he and Strachan have undertaken and says from his own experiences that the former Celtic boss will love his time on Teesside.

"It will be a life-changing move for Gordon because even though Middlesbrough is a football-mad city, the club and the place are different from Celtic. You do not get recognised the way you do back in Glasgow," Whyte said.

"There's not the same intensity in many jobs in England to being manager of Celtic. Your life is not your own when you manage Celtic.

"Wee Gordon could not even go to the cinema or for a meal in Glasgow, without someone - either Rangers or Celtic fans - saying something.

"He used to go out with a hat on to shop in Glasgow to avoid being recognised. That's the way it is in Glasgow, things can get out of control with some punters.

"It's why I enjoyed Middlesbrough for seven years."
