Ex-Marseille, Rennes defender Faty pens new Sydney deal

by Tim McGlone

Sydney FC's Senegalese defender Jacques Faty has signed on for another season with the club after an impressive run of form since signing with the Sky Blues in January.

The former Rennes, Marseille and Sochaux man made 10 appearances for Graham Arnold's side, the last of these being the A-League Grand Final loss to Melbourne Victory, where Faty went off injured before half-time.

Sydney coach Arnold was delighted to have made the signing, highlighting Faty's experience as a crucial factor in the Sky Blues' miserly defence this season.

"This is a crucial signing because of his quality and his leadership, I think it was clearly seen when he went off in the Grand Final that the team lacked leadership on the field and that's what we have now with Jacques' experience," Arnold said.

"He is a great player to have in the group and in the dressing room and brings great professionalism to Sydney FC.

"I'm very pleased to have secured Jacques for another season."

Faty himself said that the prospect of an A-League title and Asian Champions League football was enough to convince him to stay at the Allianz Stadium for another season.

"I am very pleased to be remaining a member of Sydney FC for next season," Faty said.

"I have strong ambitions to win titles during my career and I believe I can achieve that with the Sky Blues.

"I believe I have unfinished business here after the Grand Final and I want to use that as motivation for next season when we compete in the Asian Champions League and hopefully set more A-League records."
