Ex-Man Utd youngster Eckersley preferring role as Toronto FC full-back

Richard Eckersley has admitted he is enjoying being back in his customary role as a wide defender with Toronto FC.

The 24-year old former Manchester United youngster was asked to play in central defence by Paul Mariner last season but is relishing being deployed at full-back by new head coach Ryan Nelsen.

"I feel more comfortable at full-back because it is mostly one-on-one defending with an attacker," Eckersley told MLSsoccer.com.

"As a center-half, you have to read balls and get your head on everything. I think of full-back as my position, so I am more comfortable there."

And Eckersley, who naturally plays at right-back, says he is having no qualms about mixing and matching between right and left for TFC.

"I've played (left full-back) before. If the coach wants me to play on the left, I will play on the left," he added ahead of the weekend's meeting with Philadelphia Union.
