Ex-Man Utd, Villa boss Atkinson admits England talks

Former Manchester United and Aston Villa boss Ron Atkinson admits he interviewed for the England job.

Big Ron and Kevin Keegan remain the only two English bosses to finish runner-up in the rebranded top-flight, with the latter going on to take charge of the Three Lions.

Atkinson told the Express & Star: "I got sounded out for the England job, when Graham Taylor left, but I was enjoying big club management with Villa.

"I think, at the time, most of us preferred that. It probably suits where Roy Hodgson is now, with not wanting the day-to-day routine that comes with the Premier League.

"We have had young managers like Glenn Hoddle and I think he took the job too early. That's not why he left, but that's what I thought of it.

"The big disappointment since the turn of the millennium is the demise of the national team. This was supposed to be the time of the golden generation.

"At least we have an English boss in charge now, whether it's the right man is up for debate, just like it always was with Kevin Keegan and Steve McClaren.

"Fabio Capello was great with his own country and big clubs, but didn't really get to grips with English-type players. Sven-Goran Eriksson managed that a lot better."
