Ex-Man Utd star Muhren slams Premiership clubs over junior development

Former Manchester United star Arnold Muhren has slammed today's Premiership clubs.

The Dutch maestro, a regular at Old Trafford during the early 80s, is now youth coach at the Ajax Academy, which is admired across the globe for producing technically gifted individuals.

Muhren, who also played for Ipswich, told the Daily Star Sunday: "Our system is completely different because we can't afford to compete with England, Spain and Italy in buying players for enormous amounts of money.

"It means we have to produce our own players. If you look at the Ajax first-team right now, seven players came from the youth system.

"Look at the Dutch team in South Africa and it's the same. Eight of them were educated at the Ajax Academy.

"The problem you have in England is there are too many foreigners playing for your clubs. Your clubs want success straight away and think they can get it with expensive, well-known names from abroad.

"That means your youngsters don't get the chance to play.

"That's the main reason why the England national side is not producing like it should - or as it did in the past."
