Former Manchester United star Willie Morgan has big concerns over the early days of David Moyes's reign. Morgan witnessed the turmoil caused by Sir Matt Busby's departure, which sent the club into decline, culminating in relegation in 1974, and fears history could be repeating itself.
Writing in his autobiography On the Wing, the former winger said: "Football goes in circles and nothing lasts for ever, as Manchester United found out when Sir Matt retired and left a void that the club struggled to fill for a long time.
"Many fear the same may occur now that Sir Alex has decided to call it a day.
"Like Sir Matt, Fergie ran the club from the top to the bottom. Nothing happened without him knowing about it or hearing about it.
"He knew all his players, whatever age or team they were in, and he knew the names of their parents.
"It is amazing the effect that can have on a young player, when someone of the stature of Sir Alex knows your name and how you are doing at the club.
"When I heard that Fergie was retiring, my mind went straight back to the time that Sir Matt made his announcement and sent shockwaves through the club.
"Sir Matt decided he would move upstairs and appoint his successor. This proved to be a disaster and we were assured that there was no chance of this happening again.
"So I was more than a little surprised when I heard that Fergie had chosen his own successor and had carried out the interview.
"Was I surprised by the appointment of Davey Moyes? I have to admit I was, and he certainly wouldn't have been my first choice.
"Moyes took over a sleeping giant when he got the Everton job. And he managed to keep them sleeping for 10 years.
"Everton are a big club who should be winning trophies. Don't forget they were league champions when Sir Alex took over at United. I just don't know if Moyes has any concept of how big a club United is and the task he has in front of him.
"Winning is not only expected from the supporters, it is demanded, and it should be done in a United style, and that means attractive and attacking football.
"Only time will be a judge of Davey Moyes and the decision to make him manager.
"But it will be a tragedy if a world-class player like Robin van Persie spends the next couple of years in a team in transition and not one collecting the medals and trophies he should be doing."
