Former Manchester United No2 Mike Phelan is in the frame for the Bolton Wanderers job.
The Trotters sacked Dougie Freedman last week with the club propping up the Championship league table.
The Daily Star Sunday says Phelan, formerly assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has applied for the job.
Phelan, 52, is keen to get back into management and coaching after losing his job at Old Trafford last year when David Moyes succeeded Fergie.
Freedman became Championship's sixth managerial departure already this season when he was sacked on Friday.
