The midfielder, who previously played for Manchester United, has been declared bankrupt by a Birmingham insolvency court.
And Aston Villa FC is believed to be among creditors of the player, who banked an estimated £4 million from his English football career.
A club source said Villa was owed money by the Cameroon international for merchandise.
Djemba-Djemba moved to Qatar Sports Club, in the Middle East, this summer after snubbing a chance to stay in English football with Burnley FC.
His agent Charles Collymore refused to discuss his client's debt crisis when contacted by the Sunday Mercury.
But he said: "It (the bankruptcy) is a situation that is personal to him.
"It has obviously been an accumulation of problems over a long time. But it would not be proper for me to comment on it."
