Ex-Man Utd keeper Carroll looking for new club

Former Manchester United stopper Roy Carroll has returned from Denmark and has ambitions to find a club in the top two divisions of English football. The 33-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Danish outfit Odense in February.

Carroll won a Premier League winners' medal and the FA Cup during his four seasons at Old Trafford between 2001 and 2005.

His superb performances in Denmark earned him the goalkeeper of the year prize in 2009-10 as Odense finish runners-up behind Copenhagen while last season he helped them reach the group stages of the Europa League for the first time.

The Northern Irishman said: "I'm hoping I can get a club in either the Championship or the Premier League - I just want to get my foot back in the door of English football.

"I came home from Denmark so I could play in English football but at the moment things have been quiet. I just need to get a few training sessions at some clubs to prove my point that I'm still young for a goalkeeper at 33 but also have the experience. Hopefully something will happen in the next few weeks.

"I've been out of English football for a while so it would be nice to get a club where I'd be pushing to be number one straight away.

"If the situation arose where I'd be a number two then I'd just work really hard, prove myself in training, impress in the reserve team and earn my place in the first XI - that's the way football is, especially for a goalkeeper.

"There's only one position in the team but I've been around for 15 years and I know what it's all about. I just need to get my foot in the door at a club who wants me so I can work hard and prove myself again."

Carroll enjoyed his time in Denmark but firmly believes time is on his side to prove a point in England and show the qualities which helped him make 72 appearances for United.

"My best memories are from my time at Manchester United where I was able to get experience of the Champions League and of course winning the Premier League title, which was fantastic.

"Playing in the Europa League last season was also good experience, beating Motherwell in the qualifying rounds to reach the group stages. Everyone wants to play in Europe to test themselves against quality players and it gives you more experience and confidence for the future.

"I was out there a year and a half but I'd played all my career before that in England and obviously the standard of football wasn't as high as it is in the Premier League and doesn't have the same exposure.

"The Championship is always improving with so many big clubs in there so that's the main reason I came back - to play at the highest standard I can week in week out.

"It's a short career and a long time retired so I want to get back in English football and go on for as many years as I can."
