Ex-Man Utd defender McQueen: McNair surprised me. I rated other U21s ahead of him

Former Manchester United defender Gordon McQueen is impressed by youngsters Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett.

The pair held firm for victory at Arsenal on Saturday.

"It was a brave decision to go with a back three especially one so inexperienced," McQueen told the Manchester Evening News.

"I'm not sure it would work every week but you have to give them credit. It will do them all the world of good especially Tyler and Paddy.

"I had never seen or really heard of Paddy until he got into the side this season.

"There were a few others in the Under-21s who I thought might have been in before he came to the fore. But I am encouraged with the way he has stepped up to the higher level and played well.

"Tyler is the same in the few matches he's played. To get games at Premier League level playing against quality so early in their careers is priceless. They are handling it all well and progressing well.

"But let's not forget that long-term this is Manchester United who are looking to win Premier League titles and Champions League titles and these young players need a steadying influence alongside them."
