Ex-Man Utd chief Gill slaughters FIFA president Blatter

Former Manchester United chief David Gill has slammed FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

In 2011, Blatter issued a pledge to resign from his role as chief of the world game at the end of his latest four-year spell, however, he since gone back on his word.

And Gill, who acted as vice-chairman of the FA along with his United role, says Blatter's decision is "disappointing".

He said: "The very fact in 2011 he was clear it was just for four years, that should have been the situation. To change his mind is disappointing."

Asked if he thought Blatter should step down in 2015, he added: "Personally yes, I think we need to move on. I think we need a full, frank and open debate about what FIFA needs going forward."

Blatter has courted more controversy in recent weeks after claiming racism was behind a Sunday Times investigation into alleged corruption in Qatar's successful bid for the 2022 World Cup.

Gill continued: "The statement made by Mr Blatter yesterday was from our point of view totally incorrect.

"This was about the issue being raised quite rightly in the British media which should be addressed by the world governing body and to try and portray it as racist or a discriminatory attack is totally unacceptable."
