Ex-Man Utd chief Farnan: New York can handle three soccer clubs

New York is a big enough soccer market to handle three successful clubs. That's the view of former Manchester United International managing director Mike Farnan, who has just joined the board of FC New York.

FC New York are due to take part in their first USL campaign this year, while New York Red Bulls face a challenge from Eric Cantona's New York Cosmos for soccer popularity in the global city.

But Farnan insists all three clubs can thrive in the local market.

He told Simon Williams of tribalfootball.com: "New York is a massive city with a huge population, I don't want to quote a population but you're talking about an enormous market.

"In fact London has many football clubs five, six or more and I don't think London is overcrowded.

"Besides, I certainly don't think central New York has any football club of any significance."
