Ex-Man Utd captain Neville: Man City should challenge UEFA on FFP ruling

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has urged Manchester City to challenge UEFA on their Financial Fair Play (FFP) ruling.

City were hit with a £49million fine by UEFA at the start of the season for breaching FFP regulations and in addition, the Premier League side were restricted in terms of how much they could spend in the transfer market.

As a result of the restrictions, City have endured a below-par campaign in which they face the prospect of going trophy-less but former England star Neville believes that the Citizens have been hard done by before adding that the Premier League giants should challenge UEFA on their verdict.

"They (Manchester City) should take it on," he told Sky Sports. "I don't know what Paris Saint-Germain are doing in terms of FFP, but they seem to be spending I don't know how much.

"I think someone is going to stand up to it at some point. I think it's there to protect. The feeling behind it is the correct one. We don't want to see clubs put in huge financial strain and owners come.

"(At City) I think that's not a case where that's going to happen. They've got the money to back up what they're doing and they're being punished for it. I do believe that in a free world that we live in they should be able to go and spend that money and back it up.

"I think they should spend what they want and ultimately try to take them on, whoever's put in that rule. I don't think its right for Manchester City to abide by it."
