Ex-Man Utd captain Neville: Man City are 'stale'

Gary Neville feels that Manchester City have gone 'stale' in recent times.

The reigning Premier League champions have lost five of their past 11 outings in all competitions, winning just four, and next travel to Spain to take on Barcelona in the Champions League.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Sunday, former Manchester United captain Neville suggests that Manuel Pellegrini's team are nowhere near their best and indicated that perhaps the ambitious ownership group would be asking for much more as they go into the Round of 16 second leg at the Nou Camp.

"When you keep making the same mistakes in Europe, which I think they have, it destabilises their confidence," said Neville.

"Against Barcelona at home, those players will have come off the pitch saying 'we've done it again'. You only get so many chances to prove you're good enough to accept a situation.

"I think this team are stale. I think they are a good team, but they haven't proven they can go on and win back-to-back championships or progress to the latter stages of the Champions League.

"We all know what the owners from Abu Dhabi want. They want Champions League success and back-to-back championships. This won't be good enough for them."
