Former Manchester United captain Martin Buchan says Darren Fletcher suspension for last season's Champions League final has driven him to new levels.
Buchan told the Scottish Sun: "Darren missed the Champions League Final against Barcelona through suspension.
"I thought it was a travesty that he was suspended in the first place. He would definitely have started the game if he'd been available.
"The real Manchester United didn't turn up that night. Yes, they had a buzz about them for the first ten minutes. But thereafter Barcelona's midfield took over the game. And that was because of Darren's absence from the United team.
"The whole squad will be driven to get back to the final after that result against Barcelona.
"The rest of the lads will feel that they didn't do themselves justice. And Darren will be particularly driven to get a chance to play in the Champions League Final this season."
Former Scotland centre-half Buchan said: "We saw something new from Darren again at the weekend in the derby against City.
"He scored two headed goals and that is another facet of his game which is improving all the time.
"The timing of his runs into the box just left the City defenders flat-footed.
"It gave him the advantage of a run at the ball whereas the defenders were caught underneath it. I was very impressed with the way he took his goals."
