Ex-Man City boss Royle: Mancini needs to recall Barry

Former Manchester City boss Joe Royle says Roberto Mancini's leaky defence is wrecking their season.

Royle was surprised by Mancini's team selection and 4-4-2 formation against Borussia Dortmund and felt they missed Joleon Lescott and Gareth Barry.

"I can't remember the last time I saw them dominated in midfield like they were and one or two of them weren't at their best," he told the Mirror.

"Normally he likes to play Samir Nasri or David Silva off a striker in a 4-4-1-1, but he went with both in what was a 4-4-2 really.

"They're not defensively-minded and that put a burden on the other midfield two.

"Add to that his decision to leave Gareth Barry out completely, and I was surprised by one or two things he did.

"Barry is a bit of an unsung hero of that City team. He doesn't have the delicate skills of Silva or the drive and pace of Yaya Toure, but he gets seven and eight out of 10 every week and you need that kind of player in your midfield.

"Nastasic hasn't done anything yet to make you think he will play at centre-half for years to come.

"Lescott might not have been the quickest, but I thought his partnership with Vincent Kompany was the best in the league last season."
