Former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers boss Mark Hughes is in talks with the UAE's Al Ahli.
The Dubai-based club are looking to appointment a high-profile manager to help them become a world force.
They have been linked with multi-million pound moves for the likes of Harry Redknapp and Marcello Lippi.
They also tried for Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce, but Hughes has now emerged as the favourite for the role, says skysports.com.
Al Ahli already have a deal for Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro.
