Ex-Liverpool star Barnes: I have an irrational guilt for Hillsborough disaster

John Barnes has explained the way he felt in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster back in 1989.

The former England international was one of Liverpool's best players when the Merseyside club lost 96 supporters in the tragic stadium collapse in Sheffield during FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest.

Speaking on the upcoming ITV4 broadcast of 'John Barnes: Sports Life Stories', the now 51-year old said he feels some sort of irrational guilt towards the tragedy.

"I felt this guilt that they were coming to watch me," said Barnes.

"I know that they were coming to watch everybody else, and it's Liverpool Football Club. It's an irrational thought.

"So I felt this guilt. And I wasn't sure how they (the families of the victims) would react because had that been my loved one, I wouldn't want to go and meet footballers or the football team, or ever watch football again."
