Ex-Liverpool, Leeds winger Kewell: Retiring Schwarzer still Australia's best keeper

Harry Kewell is of the belief that Mark Schwarzer remains Australia's best goalkeeper despite the fact he has called his retirement from international football.

41-year old Chelsea custodian Schwarzer has pulled the curtain on his playing days with the Socceroos after 20 years with the gloves for his country in a decision that has surprised Melbourne Heart's Kewell.

"It's a shame because he's a wonderful keeper," Kewell said. "He's done so well not only for club but especially for country.

"He knows in himself what he wants to do and if he's decided that decision, then he is going to get support - not only from me - but from everyone.

"I still believe he's our best keeper. I still believe he's playing at one of the greatest clubs in the world so there's no reason why he should have done it.

"But it's a personal decision and I'm sure all the players will respect it and we'll go on from there."
