Ex-Liverpool, Fulham midfielder Murphy retires

Danny Murphy has announced his retirement from football.

The 36-year old midfielder has been without a club since leaving Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season and has decided to hang up his boots after a 20-year career.

"There have been some press reports about whether I'm still playing or available but I decided a little while ago I would retire, I just didn't make it official," Murphy told talkSPORT.

"So now I'm officially retiring because I'm sick of having conversations about it and almost stringing people along. I decided three or four weeks ago I was done.

"This is me, 20 years, I'm done.

"I've had a wonderful career and can look back on it with fondness."

Murphy kicked off his career in 1993 with Crewe Alexandra before spending the best part of a decade with Liverpool where he won the 2001 FA Cup, the 2001 and 2003 League Cups and 2001 UEFA Cup.

He then moved to Charlton Athletic and has since had spells at Tottenham, Fulham and Blackburn.
