Former Liverpool defender Dominic Matteo insists Andy Carroll is the better buy than Chelsea's Fernando Torres.

Matteo reckons the £50m Spaniard, Torres has been an even bigger disaster.

"I think Torres has been a lot worse than Carroll," he told the Sunday Mirror. "For some reason, he has lost his confidence.

"We're all now thinking, will he ever get that back? Has he got the desire to get that back?

"His finishing seems to have gone to pot. Liverpool will be ­seeing selling Torres as a good bit of business.

"Carroll's still a young lad who's very raw. With the right coaching behind him, he could have a bright future."
