Ex-Liverpool coach Pellegrino taking charge of promoted Alaves

Former Liverpool and Valencia defender Mauricio Pellegrino has been named coach of Alaves.

Alaves have won promotion to the Primera Division.

The Argentinian replaces Jose Bordalas, who led the club to the Segunda Division title last season and had seen his contract automatically extended by 12 months following promotion.

Pellegrino leaves his role as head coach of Club Atletico Independiente in his home country after only a year in charge.

The 44-year-old made 13 appearances for Alaves between 2005 and 2006 before announcing his retirement as a player.

Pellegrino has signed a one-year deal with the Spanish club and will be officially unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
