Ex-Liverpool boss Evans warns Klopp against Van Dijk deal

Former Liverpool boss Roy Evans has urged manager Jurgen Klopp to rethink his centre-back signing plans.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is favourite to move to Anfield.

But Evans told talkSPORT: “They need somebody like a Jamie Carragher, someone who verbally puts people in their places, pulls people together.

“I don't know if the Van Dijk lad is really verbal and is an organiser but if we were to have that sort of player, it would make a massive difference to the team."

Evans is warning they can forget about competing for the title if they don't quickly sort out their defence.

"There is a chance for several teams to get up there but, from Liverpool's point of view, to do that they have certainly got to defend better," he said.

"I thought we would have gone into this season with more solidity at the back. We got in front against Watford and gave the game away.

"Those things are very costly. Even though it is the first game of the season that might be the one costs you the title at the end."
