Ex-Leeds, Liverpool ace McAllister: Scotland can cope without Man Utd’s Fletcher

Gary McAllister is convinced that the Scotland national team are capable of getting on without captain Darren Fletcher.

Gary McAllister is convinced that the Scotland national team are capable of getting on without captain Darren Fletcher.

The Manchester United midfielder is to be sidelined for an indefinite amount of time as he strives to overcome a chronic bowel condition but McAllister, who represented Scotland close to 60 times, feels Craig Levein has enough cover in the centre of the pitch.

"I think midfield is our strongest department. We've got Scott Brown, we've got Charlie Adam, we've got Barry Bannan and we've also got James Morrison and Graham Dorrans at West Brom,” he told SunSport.

"We're blessed in that department and the beauty is Craig wants them passing the ball into midfield rather than the defenders getting it at the back and looking to go long.

"We're playing to our strengths, which are in the middle of the park.

"Those guys I've named, we've got to get them on the ball."
