Ex-Leeds, Everton star Speed set to retire at Sheffield Utd

Former Leeds United and Everton star Gary Speed is ready to call time on his playing career at Sheffield United.

The former Wales skipper, who turns 40 next month, is still struggling to recover from the back injury he suffered last November.

Former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton midfielder Speed has not played for Sheffield United since surgery to cure the problem nine months ago.

He is now concentrating on coaching the first team as a member of Blades boss Kevin Blackwell's back-room staff.

Blackwell said: "Gary will decide in the next month whether to try to carry on playing or if the pain in his back is too great.

"But I have welcomed him into a coaching role with us and I am very happy to use him because he is great to work with.

"Gary has a sharp, inquisitive mind and is very knowledgeable. He enjoys the coaching side, and this is a great opportunity for him to move on in the game.

"I believe he has a terrific future in management."
