Ex-Everton midfielder Collins: Barkley lacks desire to be 'top player'

Former Everton star John Collins has questioned whether Ross Barkley will be able to become a 'top player' in the future.

Barkley burst into the scene for Everton back in 2011 as a prodigious young talent and although the 23-year-old has done well over the years, one could argue that he has not quite fulfilled his tremendous potential as of yet.

Nonetheless, Barkley is looking to make a step up in his career by leaving Everton this summer but Collins is unsure as to whether the England international will be able to reach his true potential even after leaving Goodison Park.

Collins told talkSPORT: "Some managers, you look at him and you say he's got talent, can I put that desire and that work ethic into him and turn him into a top player. But it's difficult to give players that desire.

"When I watch him sometimes he doesn't really want the ball all the time. Is it confidence?

"I don't think so because he's got a lot of talent, he's got skill, he's got power, he's got speed but to be a top player – as we are all talking about it – you have got to have the whole package. At this moment when I am seeing him he doesn't have the whole package."
