Ex-Everton goalkeeper Martyn: Pickford will return reputation enhanced

Former Everton goalkeeper Nigel Martyn is delighted for Jordan Pickford over his World Cup success.

Martyn feels Pickford will return ready to take his game to a new level.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “He can come home with his head held high and his reputation enhanced.

“Jordan's made some great saves and some important interventions over the course of the tournament. He's actually altered the course of games.

“The matches might have been getting away from the team at certain times but the saves he's made – the penalty stop and brilliant saves in open play – have meant the team has progressed.

“We see that a lot at Everton, of course. You can see he's got that confidence you need as a goalkeeper, too, and that then spreads through the team. The defence are confident in him and that helps the team.

“It was good to see, he wasn't fazed by it at all. I'm sure he's bitterly disappointed we didn't reach the final but I think we've gone past our expectations in what we thought we would achieve, so hats off to the whole team."
