Ex-Everton ace Cahill targets natural NYRB progression to MLS Cup

Tim Cahill says it is the number one goal of the New York Red Bulls side to step up and win the 2014 MLS Cup.

The Red Bulls finally brushed off the 'under-achiever tag' to finish the 2013 MLS regular season with the best record in the competition, subsequently winning the Supporters' Shield.

With the 2014 campaign fast approaching, Australian midfielder Cahill has his sights set on taking the next step by winning the overall title as well as being the most consistent team in the league.

"The bar always has to raise regardless of how your last season was," Cahill said at the club's media day. "It was such a big deal winning the Supporters' Shield.

"The league was crying out for a team like the Red Bulls, the commercialized team, we were the good-looking team that people thought were soft. Last year we won the Supporters' Shield and now we'll go anywhere and mix it up with the best of them.

"I feel winning the Supporters' Shield, we were the most consistent team the whole year. I still feel we won the hardest thing to win, the Supporters' Shield. This year the goal is to win MLS Cup. Last year we were all learning, it was Mike Petke's first year. This year, it's going to be difficult, but it's just about finding the consistency."

The Red Bulls kick off their Supporters' Shield defence with a trip to Vancouver Whitecaps on March 8.
