Ex-England coach Taylor: Newcastle boss Pardew has underachieved

Former England coach Graham Taylor feels Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has underachieved.

Taylor admits he once saw Pardew as a future England coach.

"I thought that Alan Pardew had the potential to go all the way and I'm not sure what happened," he told the Evening Chronicle.

"There seems to have been on occasions publicity surrounding him that could have been avoided. I know exactly what the pressure is on you to comment on things but sometimes you are better off not giving an opinion on certain things.

"I have nothing against Alan and I hope that he manages to turn things around for Newcastle. He is now the second longest-serving manager in the Premier League and deserves credit for that.

"Being up in Newcastle the focus is on him all the time and you do need to win games. But you have to give him credit for how long he has been there."
