Ex-Chivas, Portland midfielder Lopez becomes Sacramento Republic's first signing

Sacramento Republic FC have begun building their roster for the 2014 USL PRO season.

The new franchise, founded a year ago, have signed Rodrigo Lopez as their first ever player and the 25-year old Mexican-born former USA U20 international felt it was a great tribute to put pen to paper for the club.

"It's an honor to be the first player ever on this franchise," he said.

Of an exhibition match played in July in front of 14,000, Lopez added: "If you can get 14,000 people in the stadium and a home team's not even playing, I don't see why we can't sell out every week.

"Most importantly, if we want to move up, we have to be successful playing on the field."
