Ex-Chicago Fire coach Hamlett to join Vancouver Whitecaps

Former Chicago Fire head coach Denis Hamlett is set to join MLS expansion franchise Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Province reports that Hamlett will join the Whitecaps as an assistant to Teitur Thordarson after missing out on the Chivas USA job.

Hamlett spent 11 years with the Fire, joining them as assistant in 1998, their first season, before being installed as head coach in 2007.

He was sacked in late 2009 after failing to reach the MLS Cup final before taking the job as caretaker coach at Illinois Tech.

Hamlett's job at with Vancouver came about due to his relationship with the club's director of soccer operations Tom Soehn who was involved with the Fire during his reign.
