Ex-Chelsea striker Spencer: We felt Brunner would make a great signing

Portland Timbers head coach John Spencer admits that Eric Brunner came of interest to the club because he was able to fly under the radar.

The 25-year old defender is set to take on his former club Columbus Crew this weekend and Spencer indicated that he has been an inspired signing since crossing to JELD-WEN Field.

"We felt he was very underrated," Spencer said.

"And he was that guy who when we drafted we got like four calls within 10 minutes asking us if we could trade him for allocation money. For us I thought it was a great pickup."

And Brunner said the weekend's clash with Columbus was just part of a long season for the first-year Timbers and nothing more.

Just taking it as another game," Brunner said. "We want to get three points at home and we're preparing like that's exactly like we want to do.

"It's just one of those things, it's part of the business and I was excited to start a new endeavor," he added.

"And I learned a lot in Columbus and I have a new chapter in my life now."
