Former Chelsea and AC Milan defender Alex has announced his retirement.

The Brazilian admits injury has forced him to hang up the boots.

The ex-PSG centre-half announced: "I made the decision, with my family, to leave football.

"To get back on the field I would have to have surgery, and complete nine months of rehabilitation.

"For that pain, I could not bear it.'
