Ex-Charlton, Leeds winger Sam emerging as key NYRB member

New York Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke suggests Lloyd Sam is becoming a potential starter for the club.

The 28-year old English winger has been in impressive form recently with Petke suggesting he could add to his four MLS starts from 17 appearances in 2013.

"Well, after last game it's definitely a huge, positive sign," Petke said after Sam scored in the 2-1 win over DC United on the weekend.

"I thought he got a bit tired at the end, which is normal; he hasn't played a full 90 in a while. But, I think he's a very effective guy off the bench, for sure.

"He gave me a reason enough to put him in the lineup for the game against DC and I think he did tremendous with it. So that's good for Lloyd - and it's good for us, as well - to know that that is definitely an option."
