Former Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley says Luka Modric was fortunate Tottenham blocked his move to Chelsea.

Curbs sold Modric's Spurs teammate Scott Parker to the Blues and feels it was a bad career move for the England captain.

He told the Daily Express: “At Chelsea, he could have ended in the same scenario as Scott, with one manager signing him and then being sacked after eight months.

“That was why things did not work out for Scott. Ranieri signed him and soon after that there was a change of manager and Mourinho had his own ideas. The problem Scott had was that Makelele was being used as his holding midfield player and Scott was being asked to play all over the place.

“He won’t thank me for this but holding midfielder is Scott’s position. So his Chelsea days were unfortunate – he went for big money but it did not really work out so well.

“He was disappointed because when he was playing so well for Charlton he had it in his mind a big club would come in and take him away, and that was the big move.”
