Former Celtic striker John Hartson has admitted his surprise that the club is set to sign Freddie Ljungberg.

The 35-year old Welshman wrote in his column for the Scottish Sun that he wonders why the Bhoys are trying to lure the 33-year old Swedish midfielder to Parkhead.

'Celtic's move to land Freddie Ljungberg has shocked the Parkhead punters,' Hartson wrote.

'And let me tell you, nobody is more surprised than me.

'It's not that I didn't rate Ljungberg in his heyday.

'It's just that I thought he'd retired to become a MODEL.

'From Calvin Klein to L'Oreal, he's landed plenty of lucrative endorsements over the years. In truth, he's probably become better known for his underwear ads than his football in the last year or two.

'That's why I'm so stunned Celts are trying to make him their big-name signing this New Year.

'He's been out in the wilderness of the MLS for two or three years and I thought he'd hung up his boots.

'Don't tell me Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire are at the sharp end of the game.

'If it wasn't for David Beckham going to LA Galaxy, no one would bother with soccer in America.

'Ljungberg has been off the radar for too long and I don't think this will be a great move for Celts.'
