Ex-Celtic, Hibernian striker Riordan leaves Shaanxi Chanba

Derek Riordan has departed Chinese club Shaanxi Chanba after just four months.

The former Celtic and Hibernian striker left Scotland for the Chinese Super League in July, signing a lucrative two-year deal, but the contract has now been mutually terminated.

Riordan scored just one goal in nine league appearances and continually had run-ins with Shaanxi boss Gao Hongbo but his agent Jim McArthur insists the experience has not put him off playing abroad again.

"Derek has decided to leave and has reached an agreement with Shaanxi by mutual consent," he said.

"Although he enjoyed his experience in China he was out there without his partner and young daughter and was missing them and it turned out to be simply too far for him.

"Derek remains keen to try a new challenge abroad but a bit closer to home and will look at new opportunities on his return."
