Ex-Celtic boss Strachan: Rangers have to stay in SPL

Former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan is adamant that Rangers need to remain in the Scottish Premier League.

As the future of the Ibrox club is still unclear, former 'Gers tormentor Strachan - who won three Scottish titles in a row with Celtic - says his old outfits Glasgow rivals have to stay in the top flight even though he feels they do deserve their punishments.

"I've been all over and a league without Rangers cannot happen. If there have been misdemeanours at a club then you have to suffer the consequences," he said.

"But you don't kill someone off just because someone has to take some responsibility.

"You don't kill off everybody's dreams and hopes - whether they be a supporter or a coach or a player. You cannot do that.

"You have to say, 'okay there are punishments,' but the punishment has to be there so that the club can survive.

"Later on they can get back to where they should be - standing shoulder to shoulder with Celtic - and having that great game everybody likes.

"I just cannot get my head around the idea of no Celtic and Rangers game."
