Former Burnley boss Steve Cotterill is favourite for the Notts County job.
The Daily Mail says the League Two club want Cotterill to take charge while new owner Ray Trew sorts out the club's dire finances.
Former Lincoln City chairman Trew recently bought County after previous owners Munto Finance failed to come up with the cash it promised Sven Goran Eriksson to take them to the Premier League.
Eriksson has since left and the club are trying to find £2.5m to survive until the end of the season.
Cotterill would take over from caretaker Dave Kevan on a short-term deal with the position reviewed in the summer.
