Ex-Brisbane Roar coach Farina sees no upside to Utrecht partnership

Former Brisbane Roar coach Frank Farina believes Dutch outfit FC Utrecht would get no financial benefit out of purchasing a stake in the A-League club.

Utrecht already have a relationship with the Roar after they bought young trio Tommy Oar, Michael Zullo and Adam Sarota earlier this year but they reportedly want to take things further by entering a partnership with Brisbane.

But Farina thinks that buying into a club that already has financial issues, as the Roar does, is not necessarily a good piece of business.

'You can't blame Brisbane Roar's directors for pursuing new investors when they are are losing millions of dollars every A-League season,' he wrote in a column for the Courier-Mail.

'But what's the benefit for an overseas club buying into the Roar?

'It's great that FC Utrecht want to get involved with the Brisbane club, but perhaps it should be limited to a type of "brother or sister" club in an arrangement that could include players going either way.

'If we're being brutally honest, Utrecht are going to get no return for their money if they buy a stake in the Roar.

'The owners of Utrecht already have their own club to fund and the cost would be enormous.

'In reality, 90 per cent of European clubs are not exactly flush with profit.

'While they are not necessarily struggling, they are doing it tough.

'So why add to the financial burden by buying into a club that's playing in a competition in which almost half the teams have serious financial issues?'
